GENERAL SUMMARY: The Medical Technologist works within the scope of laboratory policies and procedures to provide specimen processing, test performance and result reporting. The Medical Technologist performs test procedures authorized by the medical laboratory director; with the degree of skill commensurate with individual education, training, experience and technical abilities. He/she insures that all laboratory testing is performed according to established protocols or procedures. He/she exercises professional judgment in evaluation and assessment of test performance, sample integrity, result accuracy and validity. He/she follows all safety practices and maintains ongoing competency to ensure high quality testing services. He/she also supports professional development.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
· Preferred:
· Required: Knowledge of chemical, biological, and mathematical principles, laboratory instrumentation, method principles, and techniques. Good interpersonal skills needed for interactions with patients and families, caregivers, physicians and other healthcare team members.
EDUCATION:
· Preferred:
· Required: Bachelor's degree in Medical Technology or equivalent, with one year clinical laboratory internship from an approved facility. (Refer to Clinical Laboratory Improvement Act (CLIA '88) Standards and State of Florida qualifications for licensure or alternate degree requirements)
EXPERIENCE:
· Preferred: 3-5 years experience in professional/technical role or other work appropriate to the team
· Required: Initial documentation of competency on required skills prior to working independently.
LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION/ OTHER:
· Preferred: National Registry (ASCP, NCA, etc.) at a Technologist level or higher

•Required: Maintains an active status for liscensure as a Clinical Laboratory Technologist under the rules of Board of Clincal Laboratory Personnel (Dept of Health/Division of Medical Quality Assurance) for the disciplines of practice that are performed. Completes required continuing education credits to maintain licensure.
